It may not exactly feel like spring in Winnipeg yet, but here at Harlequin we are in right in the midst of the busy spring theatre season.

We've been working on several shows at once, starting with Susannah down in Colorado, an opera set in a poor town in Tennessee in the 1950s. Followed by the Mikado for CMU here in Winnipeg, a G&S classic. We gained a new client in New Jersey (another state conquered) who put on the Sound of Music. Down in Oklahoma we provided a few costumes for HMS Pinafore.

Which brings me to this year's Winnipeg Gilbert and Sullivan Society's show: HMS Pinafore, redressed in the 1930s!! These sailors are going to look ultra sharp in their black uniforms, correct for the period of course. I won't give too much away by describing Sir Joseph's costume, but needless to say Fred Cross, a returning veteran of G&S, will look very dapper indeed. All our leading and chorus ladies are shaping up to look so lovely in their day dresses with hats, gloves and purses. Why don't we all still wear sweet straw cloche hats? Or small round hats with a big buckram "feather" sticking through it? In any case I know I'm looking forward to seeing them all up on stage together. So if you are a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, or even if you've never been to a show, you should come out and see this fantastic group!

Continuing on with the spring season we have even more sailors with a production of Anything Goes heading down south. We have a lot more local shows coming up with Fiddler on the Roof next month at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute and a few costumes will be heading up to Dauphin for Les Mis.

Lastly, this May we are costuming Dry Cold's production of Sweeny Todd. This has been very fun to work on for me because I love doing breakdown, and it's such an eerie fun look. We've been doing a lot for building for this show to achieve the right look for the dark and sinister streets of London. I hope you'll all come out and enjoy the show. http://www.drycoldproductions.ca/

That's about it from the costume shop floor today, but since I promised in my last entry here's a photo of my sister at I at her Masquerade themed holiday party.

Cheers!
